Rams.com Ruling and New Domain Extensions Point Salon Brands Toward Category .com Names

A defended generic domain, muted demand for niche extensions and a crowded wellness market all suggest why exact category .com names keep their pull for salon and spa businesses.

A one-word domain is back on the market, and it carries a lesson for beauty businesses. Rams.com is now listed through Spaceship with a $2.5 million minimum offer, about a year after its owner, Canadian investor Frank Mardian, beat a UDRP complaint filed by the Los Angeles Rams. In December 2025, a three-member WIPO panel sided with the owner, who argued the word is generic with many commercial uses. The team still runs its site from TheRams.com.

For salon groups, spa brands and booking platforms, this case suggests that a plain category word, owned early and used legitimately, can hold up even against a famous brand. That durability is a large part of why names like SalonandSpa.com remain attractive assets.

Category words versus personal brands

Beauty branding keeps leaning on personal names. Kylie Jenner Inc filed a USPTO application to trademark Stormi Webster across skin care, cosmetics, fragrance, hair care and nail products, and a Harlo by Harper application was filed in July 2026 in the US and UK. An earlier application for HIKU by Harper was blocked in the US earlier this year.

Our read: personal and coined names can be powerful, but they depend on trademark offices and on the person behind them. A descriptive category .com works differently. It tells a customer what the business does before they click, and the Rams.com panel signaled that pursuing a high price for a valuable generic name is not, by that fact alone, bad faith. For decision-makers, that means a category name can serve as a stable base while product lines and celebrity partnerships come and go.

New extensions, steady demand for .com

ICANN recently revealed applications for new top level domains, and Identity Digital named .pickleball as a backup string on three applications, with final selections due November 17. Yet sports extensions have stayed small: Identity Digital reports 6,500 domains in .football and 1,900 in .hockey.

Meanwhile, the aftermarket for .com keeps moving. DropCatch results for October 30 totaled $66,905, led by PolyWork.com at $15,000. The infrastructure itself is also changing hands, as a US registrar with about one million domains under management heads to a no-reserve auction on November 16-17.

In our view, the pattern is consistent. Niche extensions add options, but buyers still put real money behind .com. A future .salon-style address may be useful as a redirect, though the numbers above suggest it is unlikely to replace the address customers type from memory.

What this means for salon and spa owners

The wellness space is getting harder to define. Glossy notes that shoppers feel overwhelmed by the size of the assortment, which has pushed brands toward attention-grabbing launches. Oribe takes a quieter route, working with its best-performing salons to feature its holiday artist collaboration, which typically drives most of its fourth-quarter sales.

For owners, this suggests three practical steps. First, audit which names you control and whether your main address describes your service in plain words. Second, treat any celebrity or coined brand as a layer on top of a clear category presence, not a substitute. Third, if a strong category .com in your niche comes to market, evaluate it as a long-term asset with legal and brand advisors you trust, rather than as a short-term marketing expense.

None of this guarantees traffic or sales. But when customers are overloaded with choices, a name that simply says what you do is one of the few advantages that does not need to be rebuilt every season.
